UPDATES FROM ETHIOPIA Suri Women Demonstrate 5 Leadership Traits The Suri are a self-sufficient, agro-pastoral people rich in land and traditions. My impression, after a recent trek in the Suri land in the southwest of Ethiopia, is that the women are the hardest-working members of the tribe - and they represent a subtle example of strong leadership. Read More Women in Self-Employment (WISE) Together with Driftwood Adventure Treks, we met with the non-profit organization, WISE, in Addis Ababa in May. We plan on collaborating with WISE through photography and digital marketing to promote the organization’s philanthropic work. The organization’s mission is to train and support low-income women in their efforts to become economically empowered, develop resilient families, enjoy equal rights and become active players and beneficiaries in the development of Ethiopia. Learn More Lebawi International School Photographer, Briana Gallo, and I were honored to provide an interactive photography workshop at the Lebawi International School in Addis in May. The high school students asked wonderful questions and demonstrated interest in photography, including portrait photography, digital marketing, and ways in which to incorporate photography into a career. We also explored their new campus and took pictures that depicted the school’s mission and values for their upcoming newsletter. Andinet International School With more than 25 nationalities represented at the Andinet International School, it was no surprise to meet several high school seniors planning to go abroad for college. One such student, Kiddus, who is heading to Yale in the fall, organized the opportunity for Driftwood Adventure Treks to present photographs taken of the diverse Ethiopian tribes in the south, as well as the Timkat festival and orthodox churches in the north of the country. Some of these students had not ventured to these regions outside of Addis and were intrigued by the photography and descriptions that went along with each photo presented.
