| | Sewanee Guild of Change Ringers |
| | The University of the South and the Sewanee Guild of Change Ringers hosted the North American Guild of Change Ringers’ 2024 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on October 17-21, 2024, in Sewanee, Tennessee. More than seventy-five ringers from across the U.S.A., Canada, and England attended the five-day conference, during which sounds of change bells and handbells permeated the campus. Community members and visitors listened to the change bells and watched the ringers in action on video monitors in Convocation Hall at the foot of the bell tower. Change bell ringing is an old English tradition that began over 350 years ago, and Sewanee is one of only 52 change bell towers located in the U.S.A. and Canada. |

| Although its theme is death, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration to remember and welcome the souls of the dead, who return to visit their loved ones each November. Originating several thousand years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, and Nahua people, today, the Mexican holiday, recognized by UNESCO, is a unique blend of indigenous rites and Catholic practices introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century. Families create handmade altars adorned with marigolds, skulls (calaveras), fragile paper cut-outs, and other offerings to welcome the spirits of their loved ones. Towson University’s Lea Ramsdell said, that while the holiday “is a time to remember the dead, … it’s also a time to realize your mortality and not be afraid of it.” |
